About the Animal Assistance Foundation

It all began with Louise and her vision for Colorado pets.

Established in 1975 by Louise Harrison, a visionary well ahead of her time, AAF has been a leader in animal welfare from the beginning.

The Animal Assistance Foundation is a private foundation dedicated to supporting companion animal care across Colorado. Louise founded AAF with a clear mission: “To take care of the animals of Colorado.”

For 50 years, the Animal Assistance Foundation has been a consistent presence and supporter of innovation in improving the state of animal welfare in Colorado. Louise Harrison was a visionary who made a significant impact by reducing euthanasia rates in Denver through the groundbreaking spay/neuter programs she championed in the 1970s.

But Louise’s vision went beyond spay and neuter—she also galvanized community support, inspiring people to care about companion animals and to volunteer. She hoped her gift to AAF would have meaningful and long-lasting change, a legacy that we proudly continue today. Our work is a tribute to Louise's profound love for animals—horses she rode as a child, her cherished cats (including Missy Mouse), a loyal Schipperke dog, and a donkey named Shadow, whose spirit inspired the creation of the Foundation.
